"SHADES OF AUTUMN" CONCERT WITH THE GALLIARD BAND & FRIENDS: ‘Galliard’ comes from an old French word meaning ‘merry …lively … jolly’ and nothing could be more apt as a name for the recorder band which is playing in this concert.  Of course they play Renaissance dances with all the verve, passion and excitemnt that entertained the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I; but their repertoire ranges far and wide in time and style. So on the night you will hear modern recorder music in a vibrant, tuneful style as well as a gorgeous Concerto by Vivaldi. And one word of warning. If you think a recorder is a small plastic pipe, you’re in for a shock, Some of these instruments are over five foot in length!
